Is the YMCA worth it?

I joined almost a year ago because they have child watch and I LOVE the weight training equipment they have.  But I don’t seem to go very often, not because I don’t want to but because I can’t.  I won’t take my kids if I think they’re sick, obviously something others don’t have a problem doing.

Every time I take my kids in they have a cold or something 2 days later.  I really don’t know why my kids are sick all the time.  I feed them a healthy diet.  I keep the house pretty well dusted and quite clean.  I know my daughter isn’t allergic to anything.  I also know that she has asthma.  We have no idea what is affecting my son.  I know that this particular branch keeps their pools EXTREMELY chlorinated, more so than any of the others that I’ve asked others about.  I’m pretty sure that’s what triggered my daughter’s asthma as well as my own being reactivated after so many years.

Is it really worth it to keep paying for a membership that isn’t beneficial for the purposes I got it for? I can’t seem to go during the day and I am getting my cardio in without going.  I do like having a place to go to get away from it all, but is it worth a monthly payment?  I just don’t know.  Maybe my best option would be to try one of the other one’s that I have access to and see if the kids get sick there.  I really don’t want to stop going, but I can’t have the kids getting sick all the time.  Well, no pictures of me anytime soon.  I don’t have any hair left!  :)

On the upside, I have 11 days of cardio in a row under my belt.  Thank you, Tasha, for bringing out the competitive streak in me!  And thank you to all the 4’s for pushing me in all areas.  Now it’s onward to Super Bowl Sunday and the big question isn’t Patriots or Giants (that answer is Patriots, btw), but rather - Do we keep the streak alive?

Have a good day everyone.

Well, I have to say that if you aren’t getting your moneys worth at the Y, then maybe you should terminate your membership. It isn’t worth your kids getting sick all the time. Maybe you can buy some weights (they are some that are pretty inexpensive) and do your own at home. Like you said though, maybe try one of the other locations.
Thank you also for pushing me! I have never worked out this many days in a row! Is it day 12 now?? I just worked out so now I am confused!?!?
Anyway, I am loving the streak so I say we keep it going til we just can’t do it anymore. Well, you know what I mean….
You have a good day too!

Ok I love the Y. I think having a place to go (that doesnt have a couch) has been super important to my weight loss thus far. That being said I might mention to the YMCA director your concerns and ask about proper sanitation of the shared toys etc. I think it is a problem they should address!

Yea i should of said something like that, My kids have never got sick from the YMCA…And my little daughter is the type to get sick if anyone close to her is sick, she gets it easy and i have never had any issues with it. I just dont think it is the YMCA getting your kids sick. If that was the case i am sure other parents would be saying the same thing. I just think it is good for kids to go there and play with kids, like i said my kids love it, every day when i get home from work they say are we going to the Y…I would miss it so bad if it were not here..

I guess I would say it’s still worth it. It’s winter time and everyone is passing on a sickness here and there and we have to just take extra precautions. My daughter goes (she’s 2) and she loves playing with the kids. I wash her hands asap when we get home and that helped for a little bit but sure enough a cold came through. So I’ll wait it out and take her again later. Kids are going to get sick no matter where they go. Grocery store, toy store, wherever. Soon school will come and they will get sick there too. Before, my daughter wasn’t getting sick at all by just staying at home but she was missing out playing with other kids. So now she goes to the Y and to a Mommy’s Day out thing twice a week. It’s just good for them to be with other kids. You may not use the Y that frequently but it’s always there waiting for you when the time is right and it is a getaway for when those times come. But, in the end it’s up to you. I hope you find the right decision for you!

You have to do what you feel is best given your situation hun, there are pro’s and cons’ to boths choices. What ever you decide will be right. If you decide to toss it, find an alternitive that has some of the same things to offer!

Woot Woo on the 11 days! You go girl!
