Rant Alert

Grrr Why do restaurants assume that vegetarians have no taste buds?  Do they really think that we are so desperate for fast food that we will eat anything they hand us?  In case you hadn’t guessed, I’m vegetarian.  My kids and husband are not.  I stopped by McDonalds on the way home from shopping to get the kids their bi-weekly chicken and decided to just get a sandwich there instead of going to Subway.   I’ve done it before.  I ordered the Big n’ Tasty without meat and the reaction to that should have been a clue to just cancel the order.  When I got home I pulled out a tiny little sandwich with 3 pickle slices, a tiny piece of lettuce and a tomato decal.  If I’d wanted bread and pickles, I would have made it at home!  It was so terrible I couldn’t even finish it.

The other thing that gets me is frozen pizza.  I know, I know, I shouldn’t even be looking at them.  Just because I’m vegetarian does not mean I eat broccoli and spinach on a pizza!  Why don’t they ever put traditional toppings like green peppers, mushrooms (not portabello) and onion on them?  Why does it always have to be strange things.  Okay, nothing as startling as peas and corn that I’ve had, but not toppings you will find at a pizzaria.

And for family get togethers (this one is just a complaint agains my in-laws) CHICKEN BROTH is NOT vegetarian!  Potatoes and stuffing made with it are not something I will eat!  The very thought of it turns my stomach.  I am vegetarian because thought of eating an animal disgusts me.  It’s not a moral thing, though I don’t like how animals are treated.  It’s not a religious thing, though I was raised vegetarian because of religion.  I just don’t want to.  What I do want is food that tastes good when I don’t make it myself.  Okay, even when I do make it myself.  Not the greatest cook in the world but I at least know how to make tofu edible.

Okay, the rant is over.  Just needed to get it out.  Thanks for listening.

I hear you and I agree! Why does the vegetarian plate in some many restaurants have to be steamed peas, carrots and cauliflower mix with a really bad quality fried patty of something that could be soy flakes? And veggie pizzas really look more like a flower arrangement than something one would get all drewly about… and veggie pasta sauces… as well… as for the family, ah well, my father’s view on a vegetarian meal is potatoes with ONLY lard and lardons, and salad, just hold off on the potroast today, hehe…

That sounds awful,  I would have been pissed too!  You need to come to our area, (Eugene, Springfield)  There are soo many vegetarian restaurants and EVERY place has a vegetarian dish because so many people in teh area don’t eat meat.  There is a great pizza place here and they have a vegetarian pizza thats got roasted garlic, onion, avocado, tomato, olives, green peppers, mushrooms, it is insanely good!

    Diane,

I understand you sister. I love burger king since they actually have one option a veggy burger. Us veggies have a lot of options now a days in the grocery store but resturants are so slow. I went to Chili’s the other day and the only thing on the menu was a bean burger which was so gross. I know about the family we have been veggie for 3 years and they still think chicken is acceptable in the vegetarian diet. Last thanksgiving we were offered stuffing and I didn’t see how it was prepared until my little one mad a scene and said “Mommy that came out of the turkeys butt!” It is so hard when you have a conviction not to eat meat and everyone thinks you are a freak or better then them. I don’t see myself as better then anyone but like I don’t pick on my step-mom’s bright red hair she sholdn’t pick on my choise to save animals..lol
